I was asked to participate in the Class of 1980 senior prom as a “coffeehouse entertainer” in a decorated corner of the gym. Little did I know that night would take an unexpected turn. As I was preparing to sing, members of the prom committee asked me to move to the main stage.

Why? The headlining band did not show up.

I played a variety of songs from James Taylor, John Denver, Neil Diamond, Bob Seeger, The Eagles and more for the first 90 minutes of the prom. Eventually I was relieved by a band found at a local bar. I remember the only really fast song they knew was Bachman Turner Overdrive’s “Taking Care of Business” — and they played it a few times.

It’s a high school memory that I’ll never forget, and one I am reminded of often when I run into members of the Class of 1980.

Today, I still perform solo acoustic shows - about 130 per year at wineries, brew pubs, distilleries, restaurants, bars, and private events. I’m excited and honored to join you for your 45th Reunion and an encore night of music, dance, and “Kon-ee-okee” (hey, YOUR reunion committee came up with that!).

See you in September at Gathering Acres! ~~ Brian Koning, Class of ‘81
